This Malchus was crafted by the finest Venetian smiths / artisans and is of the highest quality and was certainly made for a member of the Elite classes.
This heavily gilded gold sword has a rarely seen hilt which is comprised of a set of S shaped quillons which spatulated towards the end to form wings. The quillons are also engraved and appear to form the scales of a dragon, accompanied by unusual side guard which are also shaped as wings and curve downwards, while also flowing with the same theme and having engraved scales.
The grip is made of fish scales which have been gilded in gold and the round pommel engraved with a spiral motif. The overall fit and finish is expertly done with no looseness or play with any of the fitting, the pommel acts as the perfect counterweight making the sword fast, light and extremely robust.
The single edge blade is its most distinct feature, which is finely engraving and gilded throughout the lower portions of the blade. Most interest an depiction of St. George Slaying the Dragon / Devil. Floral motifs can be seen in fuller which is position close to the spine of the blade on either side. The second engraving include a coat of arms with several Trefoil crosses and two Hippocampus facing outwards, above them more floral motifs are engraved in the filler. The spine is also engraved with the moto “ORA PRO NOBIS” meaning “Pray For Us”. The blade also stamped with the Smiths mark undoubtfully Venetian. The blade itself is in fine shape and while many higher end swords made of nobility or for Parade would not display signs of use. However, with this sword various contact areas can be seen throughout the blade. Moving towards the tip one can see the point expands to create an armoured piercing tip able to push through and pry armour and mail.
