Rare 14th - 15th Century European Knights Sword Extremely rare example

13th – 14th Century Templar Knightly Sword with Royal Coats of Arms.

A rare opportunity to showcase a unique sword which falls in one of the most critical periods of European history.

Rare late 13th-14th Century European Knights sword (with inlaid coat of arms of Agnes of France, Duchess of Burgundy 1260 – 1327 and the cost of arms of her daughter Queen Joan of Burgundy 1293 – 1349). Shortly after her Husband King Philip VI ascension to the throne, the hundred years war ensued. These give a very precise timeline of when the sword was in service. Further investigation also points to the sword possibly belonging to an member of the family that may have been a member of the Knights Templar. The two inlaid coat of arms seem to strengthen this theory into the swords originally belonging to a family member.

Apart from these fantastic references to date the sword, the engraving are strong indicators that this sword or at least the blade belonged to a Templar Knight. It is well know that the Templars also took on Secular knights for fixed term. We can not dismiss the likely hood that he may been one of the templar knights who escaped the templar purge, it is highly possible he returned home to France after many year later away and served again in an official capacity for the crown. While we can identify other theories of who this sword belonged to and its history, without a doubt we can confirm that it belonged to an elite high ranking knight of importance.

The sword itself falls perfectly into the late 13th – 14th century and is simple in design.
The blade is engraved with a cross potent and the inscription “In Nomine Patris + Filii + Et Spiritus Sancti”

On the other side the Templar Cross and the acronym “O D S M” (“O Domine Salva Mei”) and once again the Templar Cross.
Certainly who ever this sword belonged to was a deeply religious as is apparent by the multiple references included the Holy Trinity.

Truly a rarely seen sword of Museum quality!
