16th Century High Ranking Officers Landsknecht Dagger
Private Collection
This is rarely seen dagger used by elite German mercenaries the Landsknechts.
Known for their elaborate dress they where the most capable and feared fighters, know for their efficiency in achieving their goals and objectives and for their brutality. The official swords used by these men were the Katzbalger and two handed sword, these would have been accompanied by daggers. While the swords are becoming increasingly rare and this in turn has increased the desirability and value. The daggers used by these individuals are very rarely seen or come up for sale and this makes them super rare.
This dagger we believe was made for a high ranking officer and having the original scabbard makes it quiet a find, likely to have this kind of a dagger made would have been costly. Originally the dagger would have also had a messer style blade behind the dagger and also a knife and fork for utensils.
The hilt is quiet elaborate and having a all iron construction, a simple set of qullions and a clam shaped guard to allow the dagger to trap and opponents blade and protect your hand.
The blade is not in the best shape but it truly tells the story of the ferocity and reputation of these elite band of soldiers. The dagger as you can see has a section that has broken off and the edge show extensive signs of use.
The scabbard is the crowning point and ties the dagger together, as most of them rarely survive and most examples are in museums.
