This is rarely seen dagger used by elite German mercenaries the Landsknects.
Known for their elaborate dress they where the most capable and feared fighters, know for their efficiency in achieving their goals and objectives and for their brutality. The official swords used by these men were the Katzbalger and two handed sword, these would have been accompanied by daggers. While the swords are becoming increasingly rare and this in turn has increased the desirability and value. The daggers used by these individuals very rarely come up for sale and in their right they are significantly rarer.
This dagger we believe was made in either Germany or Italy.
The hilt is quiet elegant having a black handle which could be ebony, this with a crack. The handle is also fitted with a ferrule and the guard it s a set of curved quillons with spiral ends. The pommel is very much a cap in the shape of a mushroom with multiple groves and the same spiral.
The blade is in excellent shape and is a double edge design with a large central ridge to give the dagger additional strength. This types of blades where originally made in Italy. The overall condition of the dagger is excellent and a museum piece having been coated with a black protective coat that has allowed the dagger to survive all this time.
