16th Century Landsknecht High Ranking Officers Katzbalger

A Landsknecht Katzbalger sabre belonging to a High ranking officers in service of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. The Landsknechts gained most fame and notoriety under the rule of Charles V as he spent most of his life waging wars to protect his empire and its integrity. Since he used the Landsknechts as well as well as other mercenaries from his empire including Condottieri from Italy its would be understandable that such fine arms from Italy would also be found with Landsknechts high ranking officers and captains.

This sabre is quiet elaborate and special having an uncommon sabre blade which has been expertly forged by Master smiths in Italy, this is supported by the sickle stamps on the blade. The blade is also forged with a pattern wielded blade which is very unusual and would have required significant skill to forge. Charles V ruled a large portion of Europe including the Northern Region of Italy which produced the finest and most advanced arms and armour. The sword can be dated around the 1500’s and is in excellent condition and also has inlaid engraving in the blade referencing the Holy Roman Emperor. The inscription “PRO DEO ET CAROLVS V” which translates “For God and Charles V”.

The hilt is in great condition, consisting of a set of S shaped spiral quillons and a second ring guard which have gold gilding and spiral ends. The handle is gilded wire wrap with a knuckle guard with finger guards. The pommel follows the same design have a spiral design and gilded. This intricate hilt speaks volumes of the commanding officer to whoever the sword belonged to

The blade is a sturdy sabre blade which is forged with pattern wielding and still holds an edge. The blade has a single fuller on either side and the over all condition is excellent with the blade shows signs of use in battle / combat.

The sword is extremely rare, it is truly a amazing piece in its original state and worthy of a museum collection.
