16th Century Venetian Dagger
One of the finest pieces in the collection.
A superb example of Northern Italian Masters arms.
The left-handed dagger is an early form and rarely seen example of Venetian arms.
This dagger while simple is likely made by a master of arms and was likely for a noble or high ranking aristocrat. While the dagger is beautifully decorated and finely crafted it is without doubt a weapon and not meant for parade.
While many arms exist in museums and armouries in northern Italy not many of these examples are seen outside of these establishments.
The form of this hilt is special with the Venetian Lion taking the primary role of the pommel while still acting as an effective counter balance. The craftsmanship and work that went into making this pommel is quiet spectacular. The quillons are both down swept and have floral engraving in the quillon block. The ends of the quillon ends expand, and these are engraved with faces which are referred to as Turks heads.
