17th – 18th Century Italian Embossed Parade Shield
This beautiful example of fine Italian armour belonging to a high ranking noble or officer and used for Processional or Parade.
Rarely seen, this fine example is great shape for its age and has some of the remains of the original liner.
The shield itself is beautifully decorated with many varied designs and images depicting creatures and daemons, this all ties in with the central embossed image of Hercules who is depicted killing his son while standing over the Nemean lion. These appear to have been gilded as there are the remains of the gilding. The rim is beautifully designed with different depictions of arms and armour.
There are also certain spots when the steel has small penetrations which are due to time and age.
The handle is a later addition.
Truly an amazing piece.
