European Dueling Rapier 17th Century
This particular rapier seems to be designed or created for one function only, dueling.
No doubt this rapier has seen extensive use and combat, the guard resembles a lantern and seems to have had better days, extensive repairs have being made to it.
Inside the shell itself the support bracket has been replaced, which would mean the rapier was have been severely damaged.
It’s safe to say the sword had some restoration or preservation work done to in within the last 100 years or so.. however some of the repair work is period correct .
I assume the fact the guard and sword ares so unusual will account for preserving such a piece as I have not seen one before.
The grip binding is not in the best condition, the grip is also fitting with two ferrules, probably later additions.
The blade is a double edge which has a Hexagonal cross section and with a single fuller. The condition of the blade is excellent considering its age the tip appears to have been shortened slightly. The blade is also marked with the Passau Wolf (inlaid with copper or gold) and is of fine quality.
The rapier is very well balanced and very robust, the guard itself does not cover the wrist which gives extreme mobility perfect for dueling.
