A rare iron 1st century AD Roman Legion Pugio
This particular piece originates from a large European Collection.
These complete examples are hard to find, many can still be found around museums in Europe. They are rare when they are in a fine state of preservation. This particular pugio falls under the first type and the overall condition is excellent.
The hilt has the exposed tang with two iron grips attached via rivets, the handles have almost moulded into the tang of the dagger as is visible from the photos.
The blade is the iconic double edge design associated with Roman legion daggers and shows extensive use and pitting.
No doubt they have been well kept and preserved over time.
