Embossed High Ranking Italian Officers Gorget 17th Century
This rarely seen example of Italian fine art!.
This armoured collar is very special piece and rarely seen outside Museums.
This work of art is certainly a form of costume armour mainly for parade or tournament rather than for battle protection. During the 17th century men wished to show their chosen military professions by combining these elaborate armour pieces with their high dress.
This gorget is in excellent condition having a case, possibly from the 18th -19th century.
This is in fine shape however one of the hinges has come loose, this does not affect the integrity of the case when closed. The case is held together by three little hooks.
The embossed gorget is a work of art depicting an elaborate battle scene mainly showing cavalry on horseback in an extensive combat engagement. The scene showing use full armoured cavalry with lances, swords. The background was gilded with either copper/brass or gold.
This I believe was done to making the embossed scene stand out. The buckles are beautifully crafted, the back of the gorget having the original felt backing.
A superb example of Italian armour, perfect for any Museum.
