German Landsknecht Sword circa 1500’s
Private Collection For Study and Research
A Landsknecht Sword belonging to a High ranking officers in excellent condition.
The hilt is in great condition, consisting of a set of large set of S shaped quillons which have small gold gilding accents and the ends from outwards being gilded and shaped like leaves. The handle is black horn, which has a crack and carved in the handle “LOVIS” which in Germanic translates to “Well-known fighter”. This speaks volumes of the commanding officer to whoever the sword belonged to. The pommel is an rare type / shape and having a male face gilded on the front which we believe is a self portrait and on the reverse a carved portrait of his love or significant other.
The blade is a sturdy double edge and has a double fuller at the ricasso which then turns into a single fuller which runs almost 3/4 of the blade, the blade is also marked with a armourers stamp.
The over all condition is excellent and the blade shows signs of use in battle / combat.
The sword is extremely rare, it is truly a amazing piece in its original state and worthy of a museum collection.
